The Weather

Here in Springfield, one would often wonder how anyone who spent at least four years in college studying meteorology could be so ignorant of the weather or of central Illinois climate.
They have a problem with temperature, the base of all weather. In some forecasts they don’t mention the actual measured temperature, but they always without fail tell the current, past, and future “feels like” temperature.
Meteorology school apparently teaches that wind doesn’t affect anyone at all above fifty degrees, because they say “there’s no wind chill” above that temperature. Why does a breeze feel so good on a hot summer day, then? But if it’s eighty degrees with the wind at twenty MPH or no wind at all with the same humidity, they give the same “feels like” temperature despite their NOT feeling the same.
In the winter the “feels like” temperature is the “wind chill.” But the wind speed varies by the city block, depending on buildings’ height and density, greenery, and so forth. So the wind chill may be twenty degrees at the airport ten miles away, but it’s not likely to be anything like that at my house, or the meteorologists’ TV station.
And these Chicago Eskimos think the thirties is sweater weather. Just today they said it was “chilly.” Twenty eight degrees is NOT chilly, it’s four degrees below freezing!! Chilly?
Here is the actual temperature nomenclature: a hundred degrees and up: damned hot! Above ninety, HOT! Above eighty: warm. Above seventy: comfortable. Above sixty: cool. Above fifty: chilly. Above forty: cold. Below thirty five: Freezing! Below twenty, Damned cold. Below ten: God Damned Cold!
But like bankers, stockbrokers, lawyers, politicians, and everyone else stupid enough to wear a silk noose around his neck, and wear a coat in the summer, well, stupidity might tend to explain it...
